Obituary

Thomas Walters Henson, 82, passed away peacefully in his home Saturday, June 28, 2025. Tom was born October 2, 1942, in Roanoke, Virginia to the late Daniel Norman and Miriam Walters Henson.

Tom received his B.S. in Business Administration in 1964 and his J.D. in 1967, both from the University of North Carolina. In 1976 he founded Henson Fuerst with his lifelong friend and partner, Bob Fuerst.

Tom had extensive knowledge and experience in catastrophic injury cases, including a groundbreaking nursing home verdict which changed the procedure of administering pain medication for patients with intractable pain. As a result of this verdict, which was recognized nationwide, nursing home patients are now more likely to receive proper and appropriate pain medication to ease their suffering. Tom spent his career providing a voice for people wrongly injured and advocated tirelessly for them.

Both of Tom's sons, Thomas and David, joined the firm, as did Bob Fuerst's daughter, Rachel Fuerst. He loved that in his retirement he was able to be connected to the firm and be there for them as a mentor and sounding board.

In his retirement he enjoyed the opportunities that he had to live from the mountains to the coast. He and his wife, Cindy, found their final retirement home in Davie County on their hobby farm. Tom was a lover of animals and took great pleasure in their dogs, cats, donkeys, goats, llamas and chickens.

Tom is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cindy, his sons Thomas Henson, Jr, his wife Terry and grandson Alex, David Henson, his wife, Carma and grandsons Caleb and Parker, all of Raleigh. He is also survived by his sister, Jane Townsend of Martinsville, Va. and his sister-in-law, who was like a daughter to him, Erica White, her husband Will, and his niece and nephew, Lillian and Trey.

Tom was a larger-than-life presence with a huge personality, surpassed only by his deeply loving nature. He will be forever loved, cherished and deeply missed.

In lieu of flowers, Tom requested that donations be made in his memory to the Triad Golden Retriever Rescue, tgrr.org or your local humane society.

The family will hold a celebration of life for Tom at a later date.
