Obituary

Mr. Thomas Clinton Bates, 78, of Yadkinville, died at home on Saturday, July 20, 2024.

He was born in Surry County on May 28, 1946, to the late Brady Paul Bates, Sr. and Vannie Catherine Beshears Bates. He also joins his brothers, David Steven, and Jerry Wayne, who preceded him.

He is survived by his children, Tonya Catherine Bates (Ryan Zeck) of Concord and Michael Todd Vestal (Donna) of Statesville; a brother, Paul Bates (Mickey) of Culpeper, VA; and grandchildren Thomas Bryson Vestal and Gretchen Vestal; as well as his beloved dog Jackson.

He is also survived by four aunts, Virginia Beshears Foster, Viola Beshears Bustle, Cynthia Beshears Mahaffey, and Debbie Beshears Roten; one uncle, Neal Beshears; four nieces and nephews, Paul William Bates, Deborah Bates Hollowell, Charles Edward Bates, and Jennifer Lynn Owen; and many cousins, great-nieces and nephews. He is already dearly missed as a loving father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend.

Tom graduated from Southwest High School in Clemmons, and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He spent much of his career as President of Bates Textiles Sales, Inc., traveling nationwide to grow his successful business. Tom loved softball and played for the Lewisville Stars in his earlier years. He was also an avid golfer who often spent time teaching others.

His greatest love was his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. God gave him a second chance at life, and Tom didn't waste a single moment. He found great solace in the Word and loved proclaiming the love of Jesus to others.

Tom also leaves behind many friends, neighbors, and family in whose lives he helped shape and create lifelong memories. Tom requested no service be held with his passing; however, a private graveside service will be conducted on Wednesday, July 24, at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church Cemetery.
