Thelma Patterson Cain was born September 26, 1913 in Davie County, daughter of the late Henry H. Patterson and Julia Cain Patterson. She attended Davie County Schools and was a lifetime member of Chinquapin Grove Baptist Church. She was an active member until her health declined, and during those years she served as the church treasurer. She was married to the late Sam Cain. To this union one son was born. 'Granny' loved to cook and garden, and was a mother to the entire community. She remained active until two months before her recent illness. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Sam Cain, and her son, William Henry Patterson. On Sunday, November 9, 2014, she died in Glenn Kiser Hospice House in Salisbury following a brief illness. Survivors include a devoted nephew whom she raised, Gary Dulin of the home; two special nieces whom she raised, Sonya Simmons of High Point and Julia Ragians of Brooklyn, NY; a special cousin, Margie Williams of Yadkinville, NC; six grandchildren, Gerald Patterson, April Patterson, William Patterson, Jonathan Patterson, Crystal Jones, and Donnie Gambrell; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; other relatives and friends.
