Raymond 'R.D.' Holmes, Jr., age 77, was born December 7, 1934 in Iredell County, son of the late Raymond and Maggie Patterson Holmes. He attended Iredell County Schools and graduated from Unity High School in 1955. At an early age he joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, and later became an active member of First Baptist Church, where he served as Trustee, and a member of the Men's Choir. On December 24, 1959, he was united in marriage to Mary Dillard. This union was blessed with one son. R.D. worked at G.L. Wilson Building Company and later was employed by Brady Printing Company as a delivery driver. He was a loyal employee for fifty-one years and retired in 2009. He loved cattle farming and spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Dillard on August 8, 2001; one brother, Charles Holmes; two sisters, Hazel Turner and Mildred Tillman. On Oct. 21, 2012, his Creator called him from labor to rest in Iredell Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He is survived by one son, David (Carla) Holmes of Harmony; two grandchildren, Miya and Evan Holmes; one brother-in-law, Gene Foote of Mocksville; one sister-in-law, Margaret Lewis of Mocksville; a special friend, Margaret Allison, and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
