Samuel Arthur Holmes

June 28, 1937 ~ April 17, 2015 (age 77)


Samuel Arthur Holmes was born June 28, 1937, in Iredell County. He was born to the late Charlie French Holmes and Mamie Steele Holmes. On Friday, April 17, 2015, he entered his eternal rest at Willow Creek Nursing Facility in Goldsboro, N.C., following a period of declining health. Sam or "S.A.," as he was most known, was educated in the Iredell County School System and graduated from Unity High School. He was an independent truck driver. At an early age, he joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church in Harmony where he later served as Sunday School Teacher for Young Adults, Adult Choir Director, and Church Auditor. Later he moved to Goldsboro where he joined St. Mark Church of Christ. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Raywood Holmes, Theodore Holmes and three sisters, Louise Dalton, Frankie Crawford, Nanearl Roberson. He is survived by the mother of his children Katie Holmes; his children, Michael (Cynthia) Holmes of Garner, N.C., Stephen (Catherine) Holmes of Palm Bay, Florida, and Audrey (Jason) Geter of Statesville, N.C.; a brother George (Judy) Holmes of Stone Mountain, Georgia; two sisters, Phelonese (Moses) Suber of Washington DC and Jewel Grinton of Booneville, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Joycelyn Dalton; four grandchildren, Warren (Brittany) Holmes, Shane Holmes, and Stephen Holmes all of Palm Bay, Florida and Kayla Holmes of Ft. Gordon, Georgia; two great-grandchildren, Darian and Judah Holmes; and a host of nephews, nieces, cousins, relatives and friends.
