Nellie Gray Clement Barker was born in Davie County on January 20, 1938, a twin daughter of Ollie and Cora Griffin Clement. She graduated from Davie County Training School in 1957. She joined Liberty A.M.E. Zion Church at an early age and later she joined St. John A.M.E. Zion Church, where she served faithfully along with her husband for over fifty years. For the past seven years, she was a member at Refuge Community Church, where she was Mother of the Church, and an intercessory prayer warrior. On June 12, 1957, she was united in marriage to Lonnie Barker. To this union, three children were born. Nellie worked at Burlington Mills for several years, and was an Avon and Stanley sales person. She was a certified nurse assistant for Davie Home Health, from which she retired. Nellie loved to play Skipbo as a hobby, and was a member of the Sunshine Club. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Barker, in 2008; one daughter, Sarah Delores Barker in 2009; one sister, Mary Scott. On Friday, December 2, 2011 she died in Forsyth Medical Center following a short illness. She is survived by two sons, Jeffrey (Dorothy) Barker of Advance, and Pastor Rodney (Selenea) Barker of Mocksville; two brothers, twin brother Willie (Betty) Clement of Mocksville, and Cecil Clement of Lexington; five grandchildren, Nicole, Haley, Justin, Jonathan, and Ariel; a special friend, Donald Clayburn of Winston-Salem; several other relatives and friends.
