Obituary

Nancy Ann Robertson Sylvester passed away peacefully early Tuesday morning, October 10, 2023, at the Joan & Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson, North Carolina, following her battle with Parkinson's and multiple long-standing injuries. Her daughter, Debian Sylvester Thacker - with whom she shares her birthday - was by her side. Born March 23, 1937 in Danville Virginia to the late Lloyd Garland Robertson and Elizabeth Ann Maxie Robertson, Ms. Sylvester and her mother found their way to Greensboro where she graduated from Greensboro Senior High School, now Grimsley, and subsequently earned her Bachelor of Arts in Apparel Design from Greensboro Women's College – known today as the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Her adventurous, independent soul took her to Charlotte in her mid-twenties, where she'd become an apparel buyer for Ivey's Department Stores, often frequenting New York City to view and place orders for upcoming seasonal lines of clothing from renowned designers. Eventually, she was called back to Greensboro and the travel bug led her to become a counter booking agent for Eastern Airlines, affording her the opportunity to travel the world. Ms. Sylvester was also an entrepreneur at heart, opening the first dedicated school of gymnastics in the Winston-Salem area – Triad Gymnastics Academy. She enjoyed watching every competition, along with all of her children's other sporting events. She would go on to work 35 more years in the airline industry for her beloved Piedmont Airlines, US Airways and American Airlines. With her radiant personality and voice, Ms. Sylvester took care of top brass executives in the Chairman's Club until just three years ago when she retired at the age of 83. Many frustrated travelers found comfort and calm being taken care of by Ms. Sylvester, seeing her earn multiple service-oriented honors and awards. In her spare time, she enjoyed traveling with friends and family, cooking specialty dishes, baking some of the most creative and best tasting cakes, renovating her real estate investments, watching football with family, and most recently attending her grandchildren's sporting events. Nancy greatly loved her children and grandchildren and was loved by them.

In addition to her parents, Ms. Sylvester is preceded in death by her firstborn, David Scott Sylvester. She is survived by children Richard Durward "Chip" Sylvester III and Debian Sylvester Thacker, as well as grandchildren Carson Jane Sylvester, William Walker Sylvester, David Shaw Thacker, and Elizabeth Christine Thacker.

A private, crypt side service will be conducted 3pm Friday, October 13 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Clemmons, NC.
