Obituary

Mrs. Marry Alline Steele Thompson, daughter of the late Forest M. Steele and Lillian Blanche Jones Steele, was born July 24, 1921 in Mocksville, NC. Mary attended elementary school in Davie County and was a graduate of J. C. Price High School, Salisbury, NC. She attended and graduated from Elizabeth City State Teachers College and continued additional education at the Teachers College of Columbia University, New York City. She obtained her Professional Elementary Teachers Certificate from the Department of Education in the State of Georgia, July 1, 1945. After moving to Key West, FL, she began teaching in 1949. Throughout her career, she taught Head start and Kindergarten. While in Key West, FL, she met and married the late Milton Merrill Thompson, II. From this union two children were born. She retired as a Kindergarten Teacher in Tampa, FL. After retiring, Mary moved to Greensboro, NC in August 2002. Mary was a loving, Christian mother. She was a positive thinker and loved spending time with her family and friends. Preceding her in death were three sisters, Marvia Ophelia Steele, Wheatley Brown, and LeVone Norwood; three brothers, Wilford Steele, Abner Steele, and Quincy Steele. She departed this life Monday, August 1, 2011 at Moses Cone Hospital in Greensboro, NC after a short illness. Mary is survived by one son, Milton Merrill Thompson, III, of Tampa, FL; one daughter and grandson, Floanche Ezell Thompson and Joshua Preston Thompson both of the home; four sisters, Ruth S. Lewis and Sylvia E. Steele both of Mocksville, Odelle Searles of Clinton, MD and Azelea Carter of Bethesda, MD; two brothers, Minor T. (Liz) Steele of Mocksville, and Carl (Val) Steele of Camp Springs, MD; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral service was held on Saturday, August 6 at 4:00 PM at Mocksville Second Presbyterian Church. Pastor Fred Terry officiated and burial followed in the church cemetery.
