Mary Mae Peck was born in Rowan County on March 13, 1916, daughter of the late Clarence and Cora Clement Peck. She attended Rowan County Public School and was a member of Freindship Baptist Church where she was 'Mother' of the church. For thirty-five years she was a housekeeper in private homes in Cooleemee. She loved to bake and make latch hook rugs. She also enjoyed attending the Cleveland Senior Center and spending time with her cousin Grace Wardlaw. She was preceded in death by a daughter and two sons, Hazel Gaither and Grady and Charlie Peck; two grandchildren, Sylvester and Kevin Hodges; one sister, Doretha Johnson; a step grandchild, Steve Peck. On June 11, 2012 she died in Maple Leaf Nursing Home where she had resided for the past six years. Survivors include one daughter, Pearline P. Hodges of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Kay F. Grier, James Peck, Ann Simmons, Phillip Peck, Jimmy Gaither, Joe Hodges, Jr., and Cynthia Hodges; two step-grandchildren, Ernest and Barbara Peck; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Peck; a large number of other relatives and friends.
