Obituary

Mary L. Brown was born in Davie County to the late Samuel and Florence Ellis Allen on February 18, 1922. Mary was the youngest of thirteen children, who all preceded her in death. Mary received her education in Davie County, and she graduated from Davie County Training School. Mary's love for others was evident by the way she spent her time. She was a member of the Good Samaritan Club in her community. She was a life member of Mt. Sinai AME Zion Church, where she served as Deaconess, Stewardess, President of the Usher Board, a member of the Missionary Department, and was the Mother of the church. She married Foy Brown, who preceded her in death. Her son, Smitty Lester Allen, also preceded her in death in 2011. She was also preceded in death by three grandchildren, Betty Gene Mack Gilispi, Samuel V. Allen, and Danny Mack. On Sunday, January 22, 2017, she passed peacefully in Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center following a period of declining health. Mary is survived by one daughter-in-law, Shirley Allen; three grandchildren, DeVore (Tina) Holman, Sr., of Mocksville Sharon (Anthony) Campbell of Winston-Salem; Sonya (Randy) Allen of Winston-Salem; five great-grandchildren, DeVore Holman, Jr., Samuel Baxter Allen, Allen Michael Walcott, Elane Denise Allen, and Smitty Lester Allen; one sister-in-law, Edna Mason Allen; a number of nephews and nieces, including a special niece, Florence L.
