Obituary

Lolean Cockerham Carson was born November 1, 1921, in Surry County, daughter of the late John Paul and Ida Roberson Cockerham. She attended public school in Iredell County and at an early age, she joined Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Later she joined New Jerusalem Holiness Church, under the pastoral leadership of Overseer Jessie Leach. She became a member of Liberty Headstone Apostolic Movement, Inc., and was a member of New Calvary Holiness Church for forty-eight years. She served as a member of the choir, Usher Board, Home Mission, and was the Mother of the church. A total of sixty-four years of her life was dedicated to the church. She was faithful to the church until her death. On July 5, 1936, she married Crayton Carson. To this union, three children were born. Mother Carson was a homemaker, and loved to sew and work in her flower garden. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Clayton Cockerham and Clifton Cockerham, and two sisters, Annie Dalton and Irene Rogers. On Monday, January 18, 2016, she died in Forsyth Memorial Hospital, following a period of declining health. Mother Carson is lovingly survived by one son, Billie (Barbara) Carson of Mocksville; two daughters, Dorothy Sherrill and Colean Gaither both of Mocksville; one sister, Josephine C. Dalton; two brothers-in-law, Thad Carson and Johnny Rogers; four sisters-in-law, Jessie Hayes, Shirley Smith, Bessie Wilson, and Eloise Cockerham; one foster sister, Rosa Lee Arnold; eighteen grandchildren; thirty-six great-grandchildren; and more than twenty-two great-great-grandchildren; a number of other relatives and friends.
