Obituary

John Wesley Smyre, affectionately known as 'POP,' was born in Catawba County April 4th 1923, He was the son of the late Fred Smyre and Pinkey Reinhardt Smyre. He retired from G.L. Wilson and was a member of Piney Grove AME Zion Church. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Louise Redmon Smyre; two sons Johnny Smyre and Donald Ray Smyre; and a Special friend Ms. Fannie Louise James. He departed this life on April 18, 2013 at Iredell Memorial Hospital . He is survived by one son Herbert (Jackie) James of the home; four daughters, Elouise (James) Imes Parks of Troutman, Mary Lois Imes of Statesville, Cora Ann (Cornelius) Speakmon of Charlotte, and Linda Smyre of Mooresville; one brother, Franklin (Doris) Smyre of Lexington; two sisters, Edna Steele of Statesville, and Barbara James of Olin; thirty-four grandchildren; a host of great-grandchildren. He also helped raise Harry James (deceased), Donnie James (deceased), Perry James, Wayne James, Rayvon James, Aaron James Debra Watkins and Sadellia Gaither. 'Pop' had a special friend, Mr. Johnny Ray Imes, and a loving and compassionate care giver Ms. Sallie Davis.
