Obituary

Mr. James "Jim" Wesley Chatman, 86, of Elkin, passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026 at Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson.

Jim was born March 29, 1939, in Surry County, to Willie Thelma Nixon Chatman and Charlie Frank Chatman, Sr. He retired from Wilkes EMS as a paramedic supervisor. Jim served in the U.S. Army National Guard and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. He was an ordained Deacon, Sunday school teacher and usher and was a member of Elkin Masonic Lodge #454 F. & A.M. where he served as Master of the Lodge in 1974. Jim was a charter member of Pleasant Hill Boy Scouts and a charter member of Pleasant Hill Volunteer Fire Department where he served on the board of directors and as past president.

In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his first wife, Ernestine B. Chatman; brother, Charlie Frank Chatman, Jr.; and sister, Helen C. Burchette.

Survivors include his wife of 19 years, Rosa Lee Swaim Chatman of the home; daughter, Jamie C. Pilkenton and her husband Gary of Elkin; son, Andy Chatman and his wife Sandra of Elkin; stepson, Tim Simmons of Elkton, VA; stepdaughter, Allison Reeves and her husband Tim of Jonesville; special niece, Tammy Morris and her husband Terry of Elkin; grandchildren, Cassie Carter of Seattle, WA., Krystal Carter of Boone, Brianna Dancy of Elkin, and Alex Chatman of Elkin; great-granddaughter, Shiloh Dancy of Elkin; stepgranddaughter, Alysha Hall and her husband Adam of Durham; stepgrandson, Mitch Reeves and his wife Megan of Winton-Salem; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Lucy Reeves and Luke Reeves of Winston-Salem.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday, January 17, 2026, at 3:00 p.m., at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, with Dr. Danny Dodds and Rev. Joe Wood officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:30 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

The family would like to thank the staff of Hugh Chatham Health, Chatham Nursing and Rehab, Mountain Valley Hospice and Joan and Howard Woltz Hospice Home for their compassionate care during Jim's illness.
