Ida Doretha Brown Goolsby, born August 22, 1920, in Davie County, North Carolina, was one of nine children born to the late Jessie James Brown and Jettie Ann Hairston Brown. She peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, November 19, 2013. She was educated in the Davie and Davidson County schools, graduating as valedictorian of Davie County Training School, Mocksville, North Carolina. She was also awarded a scholarship to North Carolina Agricultural & Technical College, Greensboro, North Carolina. From her infancy, Jessie and Jettie brought her to the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. At an early age, she accepted Christ and was baptized into the fellowship, and was an active member for over 85 years. Sister Goolsby was instrumental in every area of the church serving as a Deaconess, President of the Choir, Secretary of the Missionary Circle, Sunday School teacher, and Officer and Member of the Best Yet Club for 50 years, and Davie County Missionary Union. She was a woman of great character, with a calm, meek and quiet spirit, a sense of humor, and a ready smile. Her life was as an example and inspiration to her family as she exhibited the 'Fruit of the Spirit:' love, joy, peace, longsuffering, self-control, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness and kindness. Ida was known in her family and community for many things: her delicious chicken n' dumplings, chess pies, and her caramel pound cake. She was a meticulous homemaker and a wonderful gardener. She had a green thumb and always had beautiful plants growing year round. Her skillful hands and brilliant mind blessed the family and carried forth the legacy of her grandmother, Hanna Brown Michael, as she made quilts for each of her children and grandchildren. She also loved reading and studying. Though she birthed only four children, she was a 'mother' to the community. As a woman of faith who showed her love for Christ and others, she was one with whom you could share your problems and concerns and know that they would be held in confidence. She never judged others but always gave the benefit of the doubt. She was industrious and worked until she was 90 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years, John Goolsby. Also preceding her in death were her five sisters: Eva Mae, Alberta, Elizabeth, Leona and Addie Mae, and her three brothers: Odell, Jessie, Jr., and Thomas. She loved and was deeply devoted to her family. She leaves to cherish and carry on her legacy three daughters: Lula (Milton, deceased) Williams; Gwendolyn (Leroy) Reynolds, Linda (Dellwyn) Johnson; and, one son John (Betty, deceased) Goolsby; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Alice Benson, Juanita Brown, and Fannie Hudson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. She was a selfless mother, grandmother, companion and friend to all who knew and loved her. When she departed this life, one of her favorite songs filled the room.
