Herbert Eugene James, 53, affectionately known as Herbie, was born in Iredell County on December 19, 1959, son of the late John W. Smyre and the late Fannie Louise Gray James. He was educated in Iredell County Schools and was employed by Martin Marietta Aggregates in Statesville. Herbert was a devoted member of Piney Grove AME Zion Church in Harmony. He thoroughly enjoyed participating in church activities and his leadership roles included serving as President of the Usher Board, President of Men's Ministry, Project Manager for home improvements, church liaison for the V-Point Ruritan Club, Trustee, and member of the Men's Choir. Herbie loved helping others and he did not look for anything in return. His hobby was fishing. On Tuesday, June 18, 2013 he went home to be with the Lord following a fatal accident. In addition to his parents, Herbie was preceded in death by four brothers, Harry James, Donnie Mack James, Johnny Smyre and Donald Ray Smyre. He is survived by three sons, Quinten James, Allan Isaiah Matthews, and Elijah Matthews all of Statesville; one daughter, Treva (Rondale) Rankins of Statesville; his special friend, Jackie Clement of Mocksville; six brothers, Aaron James of Statesville, Rayvon James of Hamptonville, Wayne James of Mocksville, and Perry (Frances) James of Mocksville; six sisters, Debra (David) Watkins of Statesville, Sadellia (Henry) Gaither of Harmony, Elouise (James) Parks, Mary Lois Imes and Linda Smyre all of Statesville, and Cora Speakman of Charlotte; three grandchildren, Quaylen James, Iyana James, and Shanice Rankins; a special cousin, Johnny Imes; other relatives and many friends.
