Ernest Gray Mayfield was born in Davie County on April 8, 1966, son of Ernie Hairston and Ruby M. Howell. He attended Davie County Schools and worked at Lexington Furniture Company. His hobbies were fishing and hunting. 'Gray' loved to cook, and was the family chef. He was a member of Chosen Church of Faith, where he served as a member of the Usher Board, Men's Choir, and a Trustee in training. On July 13, 2011, he died in Baptist Medical Center following a sudden attack. He is survived by his parents, Ernie Hairston and Ruby M. Howell; four sons, Ernest Gray Mayfield, Jr., LeBron Mayfield, DaShawn Dalton, and Marcus Cockerham; three daughters, Justice Mayfield, Destiny Mayfield, and Faith Mayfield; Lizzie Mayfield; eight brothers, Alfred Ray Mayfield; Andre Howell, Brian Howell, Bryan Spagner, R.C. Spagner, Ricky Ware, LaMont Ware, and Sunta Ware; two sisters, Adrian Ware and Temeka Ware; one grandchild, LeBron Mayfield, Jr.; his fianc, Stephanie Fortune; a large number of aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
