Obituary

Emily Dixons life was as colorful and vibrant as the rose gardens she nurtured throughout her years. For those who really knew Emily, her souls journey yielded a vigor encapsulated by a desire to nurture not just the roses she loved so dearly, but the people who would fill her life for decades to come. She was born Emily Victoria Morgan on May 12, 1934, in the small rural town of Mocksville, North Carolina. Emily was the only child raised in the sweet and loving marriage of Robert McCullough of Winston Salem (stepfather) and Dorothy Morgan of Mocksville, and eventually baptized in the Christian faith. Emily grew up enjoying the wide open fields of her hometown and attracted many friends like Mary McIver, Clessie Coles, Ms. Lillian, and Ms. Evelyn -- who enriched her childhood. It was these formative years that helped to influence her love and care of beautiful rose gardens, as well as an appreciation of lifelong friendships later in life. In 1952, Emily graduated from Davie County High School and soon found herself pursuing a profession that would set her path on a life journey of caring for others for more than four decades. She moved to Buffalo, New York where she became a nurse and eventually retired from Buffalo General Hospital, but not from the caring profession. After retirement, she switched from caring for adults to a profession of caring for children for many more years in her quaint little home in Buffalo. When Emily first travelled to Buffalo she met John E. Dixon and married. From that union came two beloved children, John Edward Dixon, Jr. and Donna Lynn Dixon. She was a devoted and caring mother who always wanted the best for her children. Throughout the years, she would give them nuggets of advice and would often say, You better listen to me. Everything I say comes to light. She was proud of her childrens accomplishments, and as they grew older, she would visit John in Miami, Florida even once experiencing hurricane weather that caused her and her loved ones to huddle together over several days to wait out the storm. Emily eventually married a second time to Sam Hines and after his death she later found herself spending a myriad of years creating memorable moments with her life partner, Eddie Hamilton. Throughout these varying seasons of her life, Emily experienced life to the fullest. She was strong-willed yet had a magnetic personality that attracted lots of people and lots of exciting times during her heyday. She loved to laugh and enjoyed parties, card games and other games of chance. She travelled often but slowed down just enough to read an intriguing novel or watch her favorite soap operas from the 60s and 70s. In her more senior years, that love for soap operas continued and she would relish in discussing the storyline of her favorite modern day shows with loved ones and friends. Her lifelong friends -- Darlene Thomas, Dorothy Briggs, and Ms. Cynthia -- were like her extended family and shared with her some of the most eventful times of her adult life. Then on January 10, 2020, Emily Dixon made her transition in her hometown of Mocksville. She was 85. Emily Dixon leaves behind her son, John E. Dixon, Jr.(Kelly); daughter, Donna Lynn Dixon; grandchildren, Parris Price, Lauren Dixon, and Miles Dixon; great-grandchildren, Parris Amir Price, Xavier Q Price-Rivers, and Payton Dixon; special relative, Deborah Buchanan; life-long partner, Eddie Hamilton; former daughter-in-law, Anita Greer Lewis; and many other beloved family members and friends. A celebration of her life will be conducted at 10 a.m., Wednesday, January 15, at Lambert Graham Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Donna Cuthbertson officiating. Inurnment will follow in Smith Grove A.M.E. Zion Church Cemetery. Online condolences: www.lambertgrahamfuneralhome.com
